dubie
All my parts are in. Done my build =). So far, most things are working good however when I got to step 8. Repair Disk Permissions (click on your boot partition in Disk Utility, then click on the Repair Disk Permissions button in the middle-bottom" in the "how to install the strings file" the disk utility does not show my disk. It just sits there with the busy icon. Also, when I click on the 'system preferences' on the dock it does not open and after the 10.5.4 update my cd won't eject any longer. I am totally new to MAC so I have a huge learning curve to work through. I used all the same parts in the guide with exception I have western digitial 500GB sata and my video card is evga geforce 8800 GT. everything else seems to be working ok. not sure how to fix above issues. Perhaps I am missing something. I did do everything step by step to this point and only got hung up on strings section but after a reboot the about this mac shows correct processor.. I have 8GB ram & Intel 2.4ghz Quad-Core Q6600 processor. Thanks for any tips...

Take out all but 2 gigs of ram and see if that helps the situation at all
bibendum
Does anyone know how i can get rapidshare to work? if not is there anywhere else i could get hold of this package? If you have DSL and a dynamic IP, disconnecting and re-connecting will often get you a new IP address assigned... Patrick

lindmar
So everything has been running smooth since I unplugged the extra IDE drive but now I'm having a new issue. Whenever I call on a file attachment from a webpage its freezing up the browser and giving me the beachball of death. Any time I try and attach a file in either Firefox or Safari and I hit "Choose File" I'm freezing up. Any ideas?
Wallyv
Hey dci693, i searched this thread but nothing came up, i have read around and it seems that the modbin kernal fixes the clock problems, but im wondering if that will screw up sleep and restart and power down? Wallyv
Is this really a problem if you set the system to retrieve the date and time automatically from the net? Yea but sometimes it is still wrong. The problem i have is it makes it impossible for me to schedule a recording in wiretap (I record a radio program daily that is on while I'm at work) since the clock is often an hour or more behind, until i update it. bibendum
Though this is for the EP motherboard, I thought I'd post it here too - anyone running 4 GB have problems with the straight P35 motherboard? -- I have some sad news to report: First of all, I was using a KingWin direct touch heat pipe CPU cooler, but the fan made a terribly annoying high pitched whine so I'd been running without the fan until I got a replacement. It didn't get too hot, the heat pipes did a good job. Last night I took the system apart to replace the cooler with a new KingWin (this fan didn't whine). I also added a firewire card. I put the system back together, booted - everything seemed fine. Walked away, came back and the system was hung with a black screen. I immediately thought there was a problem with the cooler and re-booted and checked the CPU. Tried various things, but the CPU was cooling just fine (31 degrees C). Tried booting again - kernel panicked before it even got booted. Figured it must be the firewire card (though it'd been pulled from a working system). Pulled it. Booted, but Mail was acting funny and I couldn't get online. Realized I'd plugged the ethernet into the motherboard connector when I hooked everything back up - moved it to the card, Mail got my email. Was replying to an email and the system went black in the middle of my typing and rebooted. This is not good. Remembered that I repaired permissions as well and that several kexts (including the BlueTooth ones) had their permissions repaired, indicating to me that they'd likely not been loading before. Booted into Safe Mode, renamed the IOBluetooth kexts - rebooted - still problems Mail wasn't showing my inbox, would crash when I tried to rebuild it. Then the system wouldn't boot - once it wouldn't load the IOUSB family kext, but then it did. VERY flakey. I remembered others having problems with 4GB of ram and so I removed one stick (I have two 2 gig sticks). BINGO - instant stability. I don't know what happened to make my system sensitive to 4GB when it was fine before - I suspect a kext is now loading that wasn't before - unfortunately, I don't have the log from the Disk Utility to show which kexts had their permissions repaired, or I'd have some clue... I'll report more as I learn. Patrick

I'm doing some testing on my end this week but I'm also wrapping up the next guide update, so I'd love to hear back from you on this issue! bibendum
Yah - I'm gonna do that, but the fact that it was running in the BadAxe hack for around a year and this system for a couple of weeks without incident (plus the fact that I pulled the "bad" stick the first time around) leads me to to doubt bad RAM... Ram worked fine before you replaced the KingWin...then the computer acted up afterwards. Maybe the ram was dislodged from slot or damaged.
DreamStatic
You mention problems with 4gb of RAM, but I notice in a few of your signatures (including your's weaksauce12) that you are running 8gb. Do you have any stability problems with 8gb?

yochino
This would really suck if this whole 4GB ram issue didn't get cleared up somehow. I was so excited on getting another 2 to make 4gigs but now it doesn't seem like such a good idea.

Do you have any stability problems with 8gb? Nope, none. 8 gigs runs great. Have 8 gigs on two machines here. Testing two machines with 4 gigs tonight. I'll see if there's any stability problems over the weekend. I'll also try a fresh install, from scratch, on a 4gb machine. See if we can nail this down... I had taken out all IDE devices as well as 2gb of RAM to try and get it to be totally stable. It's run well, but given me two kernel panics on shutdown. I can't say that running with 2gb is any better than with 4, but only time will tell.

Doesn't mean there isn't a problem but I have not seen it ? Don't know yet. Common factors: -EP35 boards particularly prone to issues (kernel panics, etc.) -Systems with IDE drives prone to issues -Systems with 4GB RAM prone to issues The 4GB RAM issue could be, in fact, the IDE issue. Don't know yet. Personally I've got 3 extremely stable P35 rigs up and running, 100% SATA, with between 2 and 8 gigs of RAM, no issues whatsoever. I want to track these down before I release the next guide update!

This is my third hackitosh the others worked what I thought was well but I had issues with double booting or hanging on shut down... This is a dream................. I am sad to say a a PC dude that this was easy to load than Vista on my gaming system... One little hangup I had was the Kext HelperB7 requires that you have a password.. on my last few system I have left that blank as I secure sites and access at a server level. pavels
My system also has 4 G ram and IDE but no issue so far. Also I use the integrated lan and I can do spleep, shutdown and all. Lan works after sleep as intended. But on a friend machine same board, maybe diferent ram, but still 4G we didn't managed even to install. I was saying faild to validate the contents of some esential packages. Tried multiple times with and without dvd checking .. .same issue Searched on the net and seems to be ram related ? I don't think is a specific 4 GB problem, it's more like a bad batch of ram or something.
