Great guide weaksauce12, i used it all the way on my GA-EP35 board before noticing that the guide was for the p35 :).

Only problem i encountered with following your instructions with my board was when i got to section IV. #5, installing various kext.

It was after installing these kexts with kexthelper that when something went wrong. After a restart It went to the grey apple screen and then it came up with that error symbol (the O with the / in it). I boot with verbose mode and from what i remember it wasn't reading from the HDD, (it was just stuck at something, waiting on root device or something similar).

So i started over and followed the guide without using those kext and i disabled AHCI. When i did this after following your guide everything worked perfectly including my EVGA NVidia 8800GT, Sound, USB, and my PS/2 keyboard (though this one gave me some trouble as i kept forgetting to clear the kext cache) and also my IDE DVDRW works great. Also sleep comes back perfectly with Ethernet still working (even though I'm using on board LAN), also shutdown and restart work flawlessly.

What I am wondering though, is am I missing much by not enableing AHCI (i really have no idea what this is coming from an old computer which only had pata) and not installing AppleSMBIOS.kext

AppleAHCIPort.kext and IOAHCIFamily.kext (bluetooth is not of concern to me)?

Having AHCI enabled gives you a slightly higher performance regarding the read and write speeds of the hard drives/DVD drives. But again most people won't notice it.

I had the same issue when I was setting up leopard. What I did, was not to reinstall everything again, but just disable the AHCI from de bios then boot leopard normally, which it did fine, then again I reinstalled both AHCI kexts, restart again, an before booting again to leopard I re-enabled AHCI on the BIOS and now leopard booted normally.

Seems like some kexts are not installed correctly or maybe overwritten when you're installing kernel updates or other kind of official apple updates. By the way I was using kext helper to install all my kexts, so maybe there is some kind of bug on it when you install too much kexts at the same time with the kexthelper or it's just bad luck.

Cheers!!

Ok, this is really weird. If I don't have a current on the ethernet port (i.e. the modem turned on) when I boot up the graphics get all screwed up and the system hangs after a short while (like when I installed NVinject with the 512 mb option). If I disable the onboard LAN it works alright. It's not really a problem since my modem is always on, and if I should have to boot without LAN sometime (if the modem stops working or something) I can just disable it.

By the way, I haven't dared to install the security update yet. Has everyone else here done it?

Is my CPU running too hot? I have a Q6600 I haven't overclocked or anything, and just ran the yes > /dev/null in 4 windows and here are my temps:

60˚C

58˚C

55˚C

56˚C

just wondering what temps I should be getting, is that good or bad?

So Close but still so far ................

Hi All

I have the following hardware.

Antec P182 Case

Red Scorpion Fan

Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L v.2 BIOS version 7

Q6600 G0 stepping

MSI RX2600XT Pci-e

4 GB Kingston Valueram (2x2)

Corsair HX520 Powersupply

Pioneer DVR115BK sata

Samsung Spinpoint 750 GB sata

I have installed and followed this guide by Weaksauce12 (thanks :-). But one problem remains, and for me its a big issue :-(

The system wont come back from sleep, it just spins up disk, fans and sounds like its running, but its not. (yes, i use the Power button :-)

I have checked that the system is not running at all via remote desktop, so its not just a blank/black screen. Cant even reset the system, i have to shut down the power to get it back.

(The monitor don´t see any signal at all)

If i change the bios setting from S3 to S1, the system will "sleep" but dont spin down fans and still uses 100watt, not really sleep enough for me. But it comes back perfectly, even by mouse or keyboard.

It restarts and shutdown perfectly most of the time.

I followed the guide step by step twice, but have not used "Sata ACHI, enabled" in bios, since it won´t boot from DVD? (but i can used ACHI after insatall). I Also selected driver for the 2600XT in Kalaway install to get around the "snow screen" during install.

Otherwise i runs fast and seems stable. Running Vmware, "eating" DVDs in handbrake for lunch, Lightroom also tested. All updates running, even the latest security.

Please help me to fix this one issue, tried almost everything possible myself, that i can think of, but no luck.

Best regards

Allan

Fantastic! You should post that up as a Mini Guide here in the Genius Bar...I'm sure plenty of other people are having problems.

Thanks! :(

I haven't tried 5.1. I'll be home next week and I pulled out my HT receiver, so I'll test both optical and coaxial if you can stand waiting a bit. Alternatively, you could always get a digital 5.1 sound card (like a USB or Firewire model).

I'm curious, are you going to be running Front Row or Plex on it? (or something else?)

Any news on the DD/DTS 5.1 passthrough?? :) I would rather use the onboard instead of a usb/card soln.

I was planning on using Front Row as this is for a luddite friend and KISS is the name of the game here (unless Plex is easier?). He is using my old G4 DP with great success, after a complete disaster with windows, so I think keeping it the same for now.

Also, any experience with driving two displays at different rez. and refresh rates?

Thanks...

you are right where you should be. I'm guessing you're using a stock cooler? It could be a bit cooler but i know some computers that aren't cooled that well that idle at those temps so for a full load, that's not bad.

I just built mine and while I have not run all 4 cores at 100 like you are for the test, I get nervous if I hit 50C. What does it idle at ? Can you run it in the 32C range at idle ?

Q6600 is a hot chip no doubt, I have a Lian Li case with side fans and an Arctic Cooling CPU heatsink and fan and I'm still running hotter than I would like.

I did overclock to 3Ghz last night and temps went up but not sky rocketed.... I have always wanted to liquid cool, maybe this is my chance....

It's running a little hot. What's the room temp as that will have a bearing on the computer temp?

My Q6700 processor runs in the mid 50˚C at max use... and that's with it overclocked to 3.33GHz. At idle the temp is in the mid 30˚C.

Did you place the proper amount of thermal paste on the chip? Too much and it acts like an insulator.

You are using the stock cooling fan?

The Q6600's recommend max temp is 70C. The Q6600 should not need water cooling if overclocking in the 3.1-4GHz range. Just watch the processor's voltage and get that as low as possible as a little bump in voltage can make the temps jump like crazy as it's non-linear.

But I too get nervous with any temp in the 60C range.

No I am using an Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro heatsink.

It was about 80˚F in the room when I ran that test.

It idles around 38-40˚

Whenever I installed the heatsink I ran into problems though. I got all the legs pushed into the holes and locked down fine, but the last leg wouldn't lock down all the way. It locked down some just not all the way, and I tried to unlock it and do it again and it looked like it was stuck, I twisted the little grip to the left like it says but nothing happened.

Any suggestions?

Edit:

Oh and I also have 2 x 120MM Fans in the front of the case pulling air into the case, and 1 x 120MM Fan in the back pushing air out of the case. I am also getting another 120mm today that I am going to put on the side to pull air right either underneath the heatsink or ontop.

Try to lower the CPU voltage until the system becomes unresponsive. Then, select the voltage just above that level. My CPU runs a 1.25 V, idle @ 29 to 33 C, loaded @ 48-52C, 3.2 GHz.

I would worry if I didn't have all the legs locked down properly - seems like something is wrong...

My E4300 I had for almost 2 years (@ 3.4ghz) was idle around 55C and got up to 80C on load, and it ran great. CPU's are more robust these days. My current Q6600 is idle at 39C and with 4 cores running Prime95 for hours gets near 80C as well (stable voltage for me is 1.33 @ 3.2 ghz), that's with Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro - with stock heatsink I was getting 55C / 90C ! But I'm comfortable right now.

my brothers computer idles at around 50C and under load peaks out at 70C and his computer has been running fine for about a year now so i wouldn't worry too much.

Definately would look into the heatsink not seating right though.

Yes I am using the thermal paste that came on the heatsink. Tonight when I get home I will see if I can get the leg to go down the rest of the way. Thanks!

Anyone have any suggestions on how to "unstick/unjam" the leg?

First I would like to say weaksauce I appreciate the guide, worked like a charm (although I was having to boot into safe mode everytime...is this normal?)

That is until I go to try and install Natit.kext with kexthelper for my gigabyte radeon hd 3870. It didn't work and my computer will not boot (not even into safe mode). So my question is, how do I uninstall this kext bearing in mind I can't get into leopard. Also what kext should I use for this card?

Hey guys once again you all come through with excellent help. I dropped by Radio Shack and picked up some thermal paste (I guess the stock wasn't enough) and that cut the CPU temp in HALF!

Thank again

LAST QUESTION! LOL! I have everything working perfectly thanks to you guys. Even have Vista/Leopard dual booting

The only thing is I installed Leopard on the smallest hard drive I have (80gb), and I have much larger drives handy.

Is it possible to take say a 160gb harddrive and clone/copy my Leopard installation that is on my 80gb to the larger 160? Without any problems? Will it boot up the same, etc....

Any advice on which program to use?

Weaksauce has recommended SuperDuper and is the program he has used to carbon copy his install

I am trying to get all the files i need to use this method on my pc, but i am having trouble downloading the Software Package for this tutorial, the 19MB zip file (From section III part 4.), from the rapidshare website. It keeps coming up with an error saying either my IP address is already in use, which as far as i know it isnt, or that my session has expired and to try again. I have tried a number of times on seperate occassions and cant get it to work.

Does anyone know how i can get rapidshare to work? if not is there anywhere else i could get hold of this package?

Thanks very much

Anyone of you guys with the newer 45nm chips having trouble with the system clock losing a few seconds every minute? I guess it has to do with the vanilla kernal?
I think this was covered earlier in this thread. Do a search. I think the problem was solved.
