weaksauce12
Onetrack, perhaps we should let weaksauce12 decide whether or not questions/comments about the EP35 boards should be posted here. If his past posts are any indication, he's done little to discourage users from discussing or buying the EP35 boards (except for post 468 where he made a comment about dumping the EP35, but I believe sarcastically). The reason I bought an EP35 (in addition to my existing P35) is because it's harder to get the P35 now at a fair price (at least from first-tier dealers who have good customer service). I believe it's been discontinued. The EP35 seems to be the future of this motherboard, and I'm one of the few in this thread who can compare/contrast them. I believe discussing both is worthwhile, whereas discussion of other boards (like the DS3, DS3R, and other variants) should be kept to a minimum. weaksauce12, what do you think? When do you sleep? And my offer to buy you a beer is still open! It was only a little sarcastic He has a good point, and I understand where he's coming from...he's written some great guides that have gone waaaaay off-topic. I am starting to think we should have a separate EP35 thread though...there seem to be some nuances between revisions that cause kernel panics, beach balls, and other fun stuff. I'd love to help, but I have a whole fleet of P35 Rev2 boards already. I am curious to see if most of the problems are simply a matter of BIOS revisions, however - you and several others have perfect EP35 installs, whereas others just have problem after problem. I'm not really sure how to approach the EP35 situation since I don't personally own one, so I'll keep the guide updated for the P35 and allow for EP35 discussion for now. If I get an EP35 in the future, I'll definitely be sure to make a parallel thread, but like I said, I already have a small fleet of P35's If anyone were to make an EP35 thread, I'd have no problem sharing software and written resources...hint, hint Also, I'm not a drinker. But I'll take a root beer, thanks!

DreamStatic
Hello everyone! As you can see this is my first post. I have been wanting to update my mac machine, but just can't justify the cost at this moment. So starting researching everyone's different options with OSX86 and your guide, updates, and general demeanor makes me want to go with your option, Weaksauce12. Thank you for all the work and time spent sharing your knowledge. We appreciate it so VERY much. On to my questions. 1. I am staying with the P35-DS3L Rev 2.0 board, as it appears there is more guidance and less problems with this board, BIOS, etc. Would a BFG 8800 GTS OC Extreme 640MB PCI-E be a compatible card for this build? 2. What are each of you doing for Firewire 800/400 options? 3. With your setup Weaksauce12, does IDE work or not? I have read it does, then it doesn't throughout the thread. So wondering if I could get a final word. Again, thank you for all your time and effort. And answering my questions.
steveoa3d
My Rig is still working well, even got my old install of WinXP running in VMware for Windows Tasks that come up. I have two questions, I still have not installed the following Kext's... AppleSMBIOS.kext (System driver, updated for Memory) AppleAHCIPort.kext (SATA driver #1 of 2) IOAHCIFamily.kext (SATA driver #2 of 2) IOBluetoothFamily.kext (Bluetooth driver #1 of 2) IOBluetoothHIDDriver.kext (Bluetooth driver #2 of 2) Because one or more of them kept hosing my system. I thought I saw that if I get that kernel panic on boot and can get to the console and remove a kext ? Is this correct and where can I find such a process ? Secondly I have a Q6600 on order and should be here on thrusday or so. Going from a E2180 Dual core to a Quad Core, is there anything I need to do to my system to make it work with the Quad Core ? Just like to be prepared =)
darksamus
I just finished building this hackintosh; it works great! Everything is working from shutdown, sleep, wake, reboot, firewire and usb Has any able to overclock their q6600 above 3.01ghz? Currently I have my q6600 set to 334x9 with a vcore of 1.4 and keep the ram set to auto, lock my pcie to 100mhz and it looks like once I set my vcore to 1.4, my ram went up to 1002mhz. If I tried to increase my vcore to 1.5, the system would not boot. My goal is trying to reach 3.2ghz FYI: the ram I used is from PQI 8gb (4x2gb) of DDR2 800 and the cpu cooler is Artic cooling freezer 7 pro. Be careful you could fry it at 1.5. I have a q6700 oced at 3.33GHz...not much different than the Q6600 and the bios vcore is set at 1.2875 Have a visit at http://www.overclock.net one of the most helpful overclocking forums. macgirl
Haven't tried it yet but check this out: http://www.msfn.org/board/Integration-of-I...ve-t107504.html OR http://www.msfn.org/board/The-compiled-FAQ...969#entry785969 Thanks, I read that already month ago. I will make a nLite with ACHI (did one for my Dell XPS). This is the link to the original thread that got mine working: http://www.msfn.org/board/How-to-enable-AH...-X-t109450.html I skipped the image extraction part. You just have to make sure to download the correct version of the Intel Matrix Storage Manager. There are a few variations on this fix, but this is the one that worked for me. I think it's because I have the same board he did, and I found the driver with same release date. If you find earlier, or later release dates for the driver, it won't have the same device id's. Then it's a struggle to find the correct hacks for the device id's. I found the driver with the release date of either 11/07 or 12/07. I'm out of town for a couple weeks, so I don't know exactly which one right now, or where I found it. His link has the download for the zip file with the date of 10/07, just make sure the IAAHCF.inf file that you extract, has the 2821 dev id and replace it with the 2923 dev id. I'm currently dual-booting XPsp3/OSX5.4 with AHCI off of the Darwin bootloader. Thanks Your signature is out of control. Please read the board guidelines. I already take care of that. darksamus
I ran geekbench today and I notice that it says my OS X is 32bit even tho I have a q6600 with 8gb of ram. I checked other ppls results and they show their OS X as 64bit, any reason why that is?

Well if it works, don't change it! weaksauce12 specified F7 just so we could all be on the same page. Never update your computer BIOS unless there's something you're looking to fix. weaksauce12
Hey guys - sorry if this has been talked about, the search function isn't working for me ... I built another Weaksauce Rig and would like to install Leopard on a bootable software raid - has anyone done this successfully? Yup! You'll need a minimum of 3 disks: a functional Leopard install on one and then the two (or more) disks you want to RAID. Here are the instructions: http://aquamac.proboards106.com/index.cgi?...&thread=613 The secret we've all been missing is adding the RAID ID to the com.Apple.boot.plist file. Aquamac and his team are geniuses I just found the answer to my question..lol. see http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=113863 Interesting, so it looks like it's just a matter of running the 64-bit version of Geekbench... How important is the BIOS version? I'm at F2, but my Kalyway installation has been very good. If it works, keep it. If you run into problems, try upgrading. The Guide is meant to be sort of a "this is what works for me" follow-along. I used the F7 BIOS. I used Kalyway 10.5.2. I used X, Y, and Z. The great thing about the Hackintosh scene is that there are no set rules...you're free to explore any configuration, software and hardware, you wish to. Don't feel tied down by my guide, by any means...I'm simply sharing what has worked for me (multiple times! hehe) Thanks, I read that already month ago. I will make a nLite with ACHI (did one for my Dell XPS). Ooh, care to do a mini-writeup when you get that working? That'd be useful info for my next guide update (includes dual-booting info). Your signature is out of control. Please read the board guidelines. Who are you referring to? Also here's a "HOW TO: Overclock Quads" tutorial: http://www.overclock.net/intel-cpus/198072...-c2d-duals.html Nice, great tut - thanks for sharing! I'm compiling as much info as I can for the next guide update. Got too much stuff on my hands right now haha! I just finished building this hackintosh; it works great! Everything is working from shutdown, sleep, wake, reboot, firewire and usb Has any able to overclock their q6600 above 3.01ghz? Yeah, you can get your Q6600 to 3.2-3.4ghz on air; much higher than that and you'll want a liquid cooling system. I have seen Q6600s as high as 4ghz tho...pretty nice for a $200 chip Then it shall be done. I'll create a new EP35 thread and try to keep my discussion of the EP35 to a minimum on this thread. If you don't mind, it's basically going to be a flat-out rip of your stuff (with your permission) with all the credit going to you, of course. EDIT: Here's a link to the new thread: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=120540 If you'd like, would you care to head up a task force for researching the EP35? I have my hands full with researching the next updates and getting prepped for my next school semseter, so I'd love some help! Basically what I want to know first is, is there sufficient difference between the P35 and EP35 to warrant a new guide? Some people's EP35 boards are off in la-la land when it comes to reliability, yet others have perfect systems just like my P35 boards. So is it simply a matter of installing the right BIOS? Or perhaps only installing certain features? If there's not a whole lot of difference, I'll just split the BIOS section and parts of the Software section into A and B subsets to differentiate between the two. If it's more than that, a dedicated EP35 thread would probably be the way to go, in which case you're more than welcome to swipe all of my guide stuff. To anyone else reading this thread, feel free to steal my guide, files, screenshots, whatever you what. I'm probably going to move to a video guide before the end of the year and won't leave the text up since things will be changed around a bit. weaksauce12
dci693 has started an EP35-specific thread here: http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=120540 Please direct all of your EP35-related questions to this thread. This will help clear up confusion of problems between boards. I will pop in on a regular basis to help where I can. If we can get all of the issues sorted out (BIOS revisions and differences, any software-related issues, etc.) then I will add the EP35 to my main P35 guide. However, for now we'll keep them separate so that we can identify issues particular to the EP35. Many thanks to dci693 for spearheading this initiative! weaksauce12
When purchasing music from itunes, it seems to phone home alot. Would purchasing music from itunes be a bad idea? as opposed to using another music service Well, it has to send your username/password to purchase from iTunes and probably has to setup a secure connection to do that. They also have to verify that your account is registered and whatnot. If you're using something like Little Snitch, I'd just "allow" it completely. cacon
Yay, another working system! What make/model PS/2 keyboard do you have? Have you applied the PS/2 keyboard update that was posted earlier in the thread? (a custom kext will be included with the next guide update) I have USB keyboard and I can press Numlock all day with no problems. To test your Webcam, just pop open Photo Booth. If you see your picture, you're good to go If your cam has built-in audio, I believe you can check to see if it works by looking in the Sound pane in System Preferences (my webcam is a cheap Xbox 360 webcam without audio, heh). Updating: The numlock issue went away by reinstalling the PS2fix1054.pkg from your first post. Seems like you need to reinstall it after any apple software update you make to the OS. It's working as it should now. As for the webcam, it's listed in "About this Mac" under USB, but when I open photo booth the webcam is not initialized/recognized properly, this is what I get: Any ideas? bibendum
Hey bibendum! Welcome to the club brother! Glad to see you've joined us! Some questions: 1. Did that P35C work out for you at all? 2. What did you format your USB stick with before putting the BIOS file on? FAT32? Or did HFS+ work? Truthfully, I didn't try the P35C - I just went with the winner... And the USB stick needs to be FAT16 or FAT32. It can also be a drive formatted FAT16 or 32. 3. Got some pics and more info on that Cube hack? That sounds awesome! I have spent waaaaay too much on my Cube and I just can't talk myself into the $600 dual-PPC upgrade for it lol. I've been planning on putting a Mini inside, but it's only used as a kitchen computer (more of a display piece, actually) and that's still overkill...it had never even occurred to me to put the Atom inside the Cube case, that's brilliant man! I'll have to pry it away from my daughter to get some pix. She's on it all the time... Basically, I had to remove all boards, including the power switch/LED - the PicoPSU just nestles in that hole. Then I used a RotoZip abrasive saw (you could use a Dremel, but it'll take a while) to cut away the heat sink and leave the latching rails in place. I also used the RotoZip to cut away, from the bottom plate, a rectangle large enough to hold the I/O plate, but that was a mistake. The I/O plate is not centered on the board, so I couldn't use it. I could've cut a much smaller rectangle, just big enough for the ports... Then, about an eighth of an inch from the corner posts, I used a pair of bolt cutters to make grooves in the top and bottom plates for the mother board to nestle in (it faces the center chimney). Four small squares of black electrical tape keep it from rattling around. I mounted the jack for the (90W) PicoPSU in the bottom plate and ran a switch out the bottom from the front panel power switch. I'm using the original IDE DVD drive (needed a longer IDE cable - stolen from my EP35 build) and a very small extension for the power to it (stolen from an case fan molex adapter I wasn't using). I mounted a SATA drive where the original HD was and cabled it to the motherboard and that's it, it all fit nicely back inside the cube. When I get a chance, i may write this up as a guide with pix. Thanks for the Darwine link, that's great! I hadn't even thought to look for an OS X port for WINE! Also, someone on the BA2 thread got the Boot-132 method working - might be something for you to look into (if you haven't seen it already) to get some more life out of that beast! You're welcome. And I ended up doing an MBR formatting and just using the Kalyway install to get the BA2 running for my son. The only thing was Second Life needs a custom build to run. Everything else is just grand... Patrick

I'm just curious as to what kind of information this "authorization" process sends. Would it just be my ip or the mac address of the comp or all the little details of what i'm running. Without authorizing, i can't play the music i recently purchased.
