I do also have a USB-connected internal card reader and my RAM is 2 different matched pairs of 1Gb DDR 667 Mhz, running in dual-channel mode. I wouldn't think having two sets of different RAM could be an issue, but I've heard of weirder things. My next EP35 build will have 4 matched sticks of Crucial Ballistix DDR2-800.

My board is running F6 bios version, There is an update for it on Gigabyte's site but I don't have Windows to install it or a floppy drive. The DLink BlueTooth adapter works great and pairs with my Apple Wireless Keyboard just fine after it boots completely.

Back to report...

 

Ok, so I followed the guide correctly this time...did the proper restart at the end of step 4. I loaded all 5 of the kext files, the audio, and video afterwards. Same Problem.

 

I reloaded again, did the same things, left off the two bluetooth kext files...bingo. I'm up and running!

 

Part of me wants to go back now and install JUST these two kext files...part of me wants to leave well enough alone...any thoughts?

On a side note, I am running a BFG 8800gt OC 512mb on a widescreen monitor and I'm having two problems.

 

1. I don't have a widescreen resolution (1280X768) to choose.

 

2. When I choose any other resolution, my screen goes light blue and I have to force a reset. In profiler, everything looks fine. Card is QE enabled and all that, even reports my ram size fine.

 

I can live with the weirdness of the res changing, but any idea how I add a resolution to the list of options? Lack of widescreen is killin me.

 

O, and AWESOME news on using face wizard with the board...I didnt have the stones to test that one myself.

 

 

So, I was having a similar issue with the kext files at the end, except I was getting errors after installing the AHCI kexts. I went back to do the install from the beginning, and I left out the AHCI kexts at step 5. Rebooted fine no problem. Installed the audio kext, rebooted, no problem. Installed the video kext, rebooted, no problem rebooting into the GUI. However, the graphics were not behaving correctly, blue screened changing the res, the screen was not redrawing correctly and I couldn't even get System Preferences to load on the screen, I kept getting an error message..

I changed the DVI connector and restarted the system, graphics were automatically set to 12x10, I could change to a different resolution with no problems! So now the problem is that when the system first starts up, the desktop doesn't draw anything on the screen that doesn't have an icon, or toolbar, it's just black except where the drive icons and launch bar is. Previously, I had QE supported, but now it says it's not supported.

 

Once, I open up a few windows and get stuff running, the screen doesn't seem to have any issues like it did when I had it connected to the 2nd(?) DVI port on the card. Everything works graphics wise while navigating (windows opening, closing, animations, etc.), I still have to test video and other stuff like that.

 

I was feeling good about the video anyway, and decided to load the AHCI kexts to see what would happen. Installed, rebooted, no problems. I still get that com.orByte yellow warning message in the start up, but the system boots into the GUI. The only other thing I noticed is, when I sleep the machine, after I wake it up, it will hang on the very next shut down command. I have to hold the power button down, in order for it to completely shut down. But, restart, shut down and sleep now work how they're supposed to otherwise.

I believe USB legacy has to be set in bios and also the usb stick formatted to fat16 instead of fat32. (should display as HDD)

Also, my graphics settings don't seem to stick. If the system starts and shows QE support, I can't change resolution without blue screening, or I can't start System Preferences, it just shows 'quit unexpectedly, relaunch' message.

 

If the system starts without QE support, I can change the resolution and launch System Preferences, but I still get the DVD reboot message.

 

I was considering trying the manual fix from this thread, but I wanted to check whether anyone else has tried it, or anyone knows if this will work on this 10.5.4 install:

edit: I just restarted with QE support no problems changing resolution. DVD Player still prompts reboot. Installed VLC Intel-specific package, no problem playing DVD in any size (picture soooo much better than in Windows ).

Restarted with shift held down and then it restarted again back in 1680 x 1050 mode. I think I'm going to skip the step-by-step photo/screenshot PDF guide and just do a printable PDF checklist to follow along with the video. It's so much easier if you just watch it on screen...instead of reading 10-20 pages of a tutorial, you can spend 10 minutes following along with the video and know how to do it even better.

That's odd...if you're having video card problems, you should have problems with both Apple DVD Player AND VLC. Hmm.

That almost always means your video card isn't properly installed (software-wise). Yes, try a different package. Try to find a thread in the Graphics sub-forum with other users who have the same card as you, and see if they're having issues too.

I could have sworn it worked with VMware, but I guess I did the initial test on my Q6600, not the E2180. Well that's a bummer! Thanks for finding that out! Guess I've got a good beater chip for testing systems now

 

Edit: Just for fun, I installed VMware (I'm stil running v1.1.1) and installed XP...IT WORKS! The E2180 is capable of running Windows XP in VMware!

 

 

Also, I haven't installed the Encore PCI card in this rig yet, so I've just been using Onboard Ethernet. With a default Kalyway install, with no drivers installed under Networking, the Onboard Ethernet will wake from sleep, but won't see AFP/Bonjour shares. Just FYI if you're planning on using the Onboard NIC. I couldn't remember which driver did what after testing so many. The frustrating thing is, it will show my AFP server for like 5 seconds, then it disappears. Definitely something whacky with the default Leopard networking driver and our onboard networking hardware! This is now an experimental feature on our board and I am recommending either a compatible PCI Network card or Wireless card as the default networking option for 100% compatibility.

Yeah, I was going to write that I've used both on my E2180. I'm not sure what the Intel IVT technology in the Core 2 Duos is used for, but it's not crucial to Parallels or VMWare.

I bought this motherboard and the recommended ethernet pci card based on the stellar reports from folks in this thread. I, like another guy in this thread, broke down my badaxe II based system to build this one, primarily because I could not successfully get my badaxe II to sleep. I've been a big fan of Weaksauce's work for a long time! Thanks!

 

I have a few issues with this install, and wonder of I could get some help:

 

1) After installing Kalyway 10.5.2, the hard drive will not boot unless the Kalway DVD is in the drive. That is, if I try to boot without the DVD in the drive, I am presented with the following error:

 

boot0: GPT

boot0: HFS+

boot0: booting

boot0: done

HFS+ partition error

 

How can I make that problem go away?

 

2) After steps 5,6,7 and 8 (which I did all of these steps and then rebooted - should I have rebooted in between each step?) I get an error on booting into Leopard titled "Disk Insertion" "the disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" (Initialize - Ignore - Eject).

 

The disk it is referring to is my separate sata hard drive that has my Windows XP installation. I don't want to have to reformat it. Have any of you experienced (and solved) this problem before?

 

3) Lastly, my machine does not wake from sleep. I suspect it is because my video card is the ATI HD2600 XT (256mb). I am using the Natit.kext file from netkas's web site. I read elsewhere in this thread that someone may have used a patch from the Kalyway 10.5.2 DVD to get that to work. But since my card is one that is used in stock Apple hardware, is there any way to insert an EFI string into the com.apple.boot.plist to make it work?

 

The jack-leg place I ordered this board from sent me an open-box one without me having ordered an open-box one, so I guess it could be a defective board. But I thought I'd ask if these are simple problems to fix before going through the hassle of sending it back.

Actually, that was a few days ago, on one of my many subsequent installs, and then I figured out I wasn't paying attention to the difference between the .pkg files and the .kext files. I was dropping the .pkg files onto the Kexthelper icon, and trying to install them from there. Then I realized you're supposed to double-click the CHUD and the PowerOffBugFix icons to install them with their own installer. That provided the Developer folder, and solved my power down issues.

 

I think that just substituting 'Install' with 'Double-click' in steps 3, 4 and 5 from section 4, would alleviate at least these issues.

Yeah, the settings aren't sticking 100% of the time. Weird, huh? But, the VLC is running beautifully. Tonight, I'm going install Reason 3 and see how the components handle that kind of load on the system.

Eh? Front Row's already installed, buddy Just press the Command key (whatever the Apple button is on your keyboard) plus Escape. It's actually better than the old Front Row on the AppleTV because you can play DVD discs with it, not just streaming network content!

 

One of my future guides includes an HD HTPC Hackintosh for exactly this purpose (well, that and Plex, but again, that's a whole different guide hehe).

Yup, it's a flashed BFG 8800GTX video card. Basically, Apple sells the NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600 1.5GB for the Mac Pro for $2,850.00. You can flash the 768mb BFG 8800GTX into a Quadro FX 5600 for a mere $408:

The BFG "only" has 1/2 the RAM that the official Apple card does, but 768mb is still pretty dang good. Here's the installation info:

This mod has been working great in my systems since February. If you're looking for a crazy awesome workstation-class card, this is your ticket! From what I've heard, NVIDIA cripples the software in Windows if you mod it to a Quadro, so it will work, but it will be sluggish (not so in Mac, whoohoo!). If you just want the power without the workstation stuff, snag that $170 8800GTX deal I posted earlier...that way you can dual-boot into Windows and play games with mega-high detail with no software slowdown!

What are you planning on doing with it? Like I mentioned above, if you dual-boot into Windows, don't do the mod because NVIDIA supposedly cripples the card with their software under XP & Vista. Also, if you're gaming, just leave it as an 8800GTX - it will perform much better on both platforms.
