UD3P is smooth sailing. Have a couple tweaks left to do before releasing a package. It has some really nice features:

-Affordable ($140)

-Low price for its enormous feature set

-Commonly available (no hunting on eBay at inflated prices)

-Onboard Firewire (4-pin & 6-pin on the rear panel; internal Firewire header for front-of-case Firewire jack)

-8 USB ports (plus 2 internal headers - I use one for my front USB ports and one for my 3.5" internal card reader)

-Audio supported via Kexts (no need for Taruga) with front Headphone jack supported

-(1) 16x PCIe port @ 16x

-(1) 16x PCIe port @ 8x

-(3) 1x PCIe ports

-(2) PCI ports

-Wake from Sleep via USB keyboard or mouse

-16gb RAM max

-Dual onboard Gigabit Ethernet jacks (fully supported with R1000 kext)

This is the board I am recommending from now on. It has more features than the DS3L and is available everywhere. The full model is the "Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P". Not that this is not the same as the "GA-EP45T-UD3P". Here's a Newegg link:

You got it going?! Hooray! I've been getting kernel panics every time I shutdown with my setup. Can't wait to try yours! Keep us posted.

Mine's in daily use - been so since thanksgiving... in fact, I haven't rebooted since Dec 14...

At first I had some issues - random freezes - traced to the generic CPU power management kext. Once I got rid of that, been smooth sailing...

I am also smooth on GA-EP45-UD3P - it is a nice board. Would be happy to look at your plugin and compare the kexts i am using though. I bought this board as an experiment and moved my old CPU, RAM and video card from my Dell XPS to see if I would like OSx. Well, the Dell is on ebay and I bought a new q9550, some new 1066 ram and a 3870 512mb. I am a full convert now. Even running OSx on my Thinkpad heh (talk about worlds colliding).

i actually used your uinstaller to set it up and just added a few choice kexts to the additional box and haven't looked back.

Yeah it's pretty similar to the DS3L.

I just installed my 3870 this morning. Not much in the way of fan power managament, haha. I'm using mitch_de's EFI String and it's working pretty well. How did you install it initially? I got garbage on the screen and had to use an Nvidia card for the initial setup.

I don't have it yet - I get it monday. I am running 10.5.6 so I hope I can just slap it in, heh. If not I will use the current nvidia i have to get going.

Quick question. Is there anyway to enable wakeup from sleep using a USB keyboard or mouse with the ga-p35-ds3l?

Also, does the above post mean you're abandoning us ds3l owners to the screaming void in the future? :P

NOOOOOOO!

please do not abandon the DS3L! just ordered it off ebay about an hour ago... :(

lame.

I have three P35-DS3L boards and one EP35-DS3L board, I don't think I'll be upgrading those for awhile :P However I won't have much time for Hackintosh starting later this month (45 hour a week job + fulltime college), so all of my rigs are going to be on 10.5.5 for a couple years I think. There's nothing overly difficult about maintaining the system...you just have to read! Nothing in my guide is especially new or interesting, it's just my step-by-step notes on how to install the existing files, along with noted quirks about the DS3L board. You can do it! :)

i got to tell you that your final draft version works much better than your final released version. I am going to stick with your final draft version.

What kind of problems are you having? I've got 4 DS3L boards here that work just fine ;)

I posted a hex file for my Sapphire here:

The power management for the fan control is crappy, so I'd suggest replacing it with a silent cooler and slapping a couple after market fans on it like I'm doing. Sucker sounds like a little vacuum cleaner full-blast :D

No, Gigabyte's BIOS does now allow wake-from-sleep via USB, only PS/2.

Unfortunately writing and maintaining guides requires a lot of time, and I won't have much spare time this semester (my day starts at 4:00am and ends at 9:00pm). I am busily converting the guide over to a Wiki so that it's easier for me to maintain. Personally I'm extremely happy with 10.5.5 and it more than meets my needs. However, like I said above, it's not overly difficult to do any of this - as long as you're willing to read! ;)

Weird, must be a quirk of OSX because I use the Apple aluminum keyboard in both vista and OSX and it wakes from sleep fine in vista with both the keyboard and mouse, both of which are USB.

good luck with the killer semester! before you go, i have a few quick questions if you have the time.

i am building a media center for pretty much movie playback only.

i currently have 2 hackintosh machines running 10.5.2 and im happy with using it for the media center as well. Do you think i'd have any problems using your kext package for 10.5.4 with 10.5.2?

also won't be needing sleep functionality, so far as i understand, i shouldn't need to run the vanilla kernel, right? are there any kexts i should omit or add just going to 10.5.2?

my other question is, will i be able to utilize 5.1 sound output on the DS3L?

btw, graphics card is 8600GT.. so i'm thinking your version of NVinject will work.

thanks again for all the hard work :D

Weird, Gigabyte has specifically come out and said the DS3L will not wake from S3 sleep via USB. It doesn't work on any of my USB keyboards or mice on any of my DS3L rigs, either. Maybe it's your Apple keyboard? :hysterical:

Hah I don't start for a week or two. I will still pop in here from time to time, don't worry :hysterical:

I haven't tried the new kexts with Kalyway, but I'd imagine they should work. Just have a bootable backup ready. As far as 5.1, if your source file supports it and your media player of choice supports it, and you're using optical audio output, then yes, you can get 5.1. Use EFI Strings for your 8600GT, just check the Video Card box in Uinstaller to add it in. Heck, you might just want to do a fresh install - it's super easy!

Hm, maybe Vista uses a different sleep mode by default than OSX?

Wait, I'm confused - does the USB keyboard only wake up Vista, or does it wake up both Vista & OS X? The sleep mode is set by the BIOS (S3 in our case, or "deep sleep"), but both OS's have different hibernation modes.

*only* in Vista. So in other words, it does not wake OSX.

USB wake from sleep works in windows.

USB wake from sleep does not work in OSX and apparently never will.

are you sure you do not mean Vista is in 'standby'?

as the man says s3 is a bios function and not supported on the ds3l

I hit "sleep" in Windows and it turns off, but can be turned on with any usb input device. I hit "sleep" in OSX and I cannot turn it back on with a usb device. I'm not arguing that what he's saying is true, I think this is more confusion on my part as to what standby and sleep actually are.

I have a few questions for you, if you dont mind.

1. I use 10.5.5 at the moment how do I update to 10.5.6 what do I need to know?

2. Planing to build a few machines for my mates here in the university, what mainboards would be the best to opt for at this moment?

weaksauce - thank you SO MUCH for posting these great guides!

i've been reading and rereading your 10.5.4 guide and i think i've got almost everything.. but would you mind giving a tiny bit of clarification?

in DS3L-Package/Audio there are two files; ACL888.codec.txt and HDAEnabler.kext

which one should i drag-and-drop onto the frogs head? or do i do both?!

thank you in advance.. :)

Is anyone having any issues here w/ their hackintoshes being seen as Power PC's? I've noticed the Processor name is missing from system profiler, and I think this is what is causing issues w/ some things not running. Namely, quite a bit of flash 10 stuff I'm noticing.

Any ideas?
