Hey all, i tried to do the combo update straight from apple and it bricked my system. So ill use the kalyway 10.5.3 to update this time. However before i reinstal i was wondering if my data would remain intact? I have some stuff i would rather keep than loose. Does reinstaling the system keep the home folder intact?

What made you think it wouldn't brick your system? :D

When I was on iAtkos v1, the combo updater from apple is what I used in my first successful upgrade to 10.5.2 via update. Yeah, I had some problems and had to tweak stuff like everyone else, but it worked for me.

What made you think it wouldn't brick your system?

well i figured since i had vanilla kernel that i would be safe. Ad for the -v ill post a screen shot as soon as i can;) other then that is there any way i could just backup some files real quick? or maybe undo the update

Bricked is a term many people use incorrectly. When there's a hardware or firmware problem that makes something useless as a brick, then it's bricked. If you can fix something by re-installing software, then it was never really "bricked" at all.

Anyway, good luck getting it sorted out!

you can safetly reinstall 10.5.2 over 10.5.3. just don't initialize the HD from disk Utility. i did it 4 times already on the same installatione because of bad updates on a desktop HP.

Ok first off i know the system isnt "bricked" per se, but it wont boot into os x is probably what i should have said.

@ mrroboto can you clarify what you mean by not initialing from the HD in disk utility?

Is there no way to backup files when OS X doesnt boot? in xp i can, why cant i on osx? what do you guys think of instaling the program that lets you read os x hard drives on xp?

Ok its me posting back again. sorry it took so long. I backed up my files with HFSExplorer. I reinstalled but now i have another problem. My log on information is still on. IE when I press my account to log on my user name and password its the same as before i formated. Now here is the problem, when I enter my information and press Log on, the screen fades to blue, and comes back to the log in screen. Any ideas?

I didn't wanted to update my kalyway 10.5.2 with Apple original files at all, but didn't pay enough attention when accepted the Itunes update...it messed up with my computer: internet is not working properly (stops after a while using), and the dvd drive is not being recognized. Then I tried to update it to 10.5.5 with the method that I found here (files were already downloaded), and in the restart after the installation the computer had problems in the boot, probably because of the nvidia video drivers. If I could put my Kalyway DVD to run, I believe I could reinstall it, but it's not opening the drive, not even showing it in the bios settings. What could I do to fix it?

DVD device is working, but i'm still not able to get through the boot screen. In the Darwin screen, the computer restarts, no video therefore. Does it have something to do with the nvidia drivers installed in the pre update procedure? I want to reinstall leopard in my computer; does anyone know what to do in this case?
