[HOW TO]: Make 9800GX2 work in Mac Leopard 10.5.5! QE/CI Enabled! (WORKS ON NVIDIA M/Bs ONLY!)

I have almost the exact same config except that I'm using an EVGA 9800GX2 SSC Edition. Unfortunately after I make the changes and reboot, it goes through the loading of the OS but then I get a blue (or black depending on how you look at it) screen when it tries to load the GUI. I have to delete the kext files to get back in. I'm using the HDMI output because I have it connected to an AX-200U projector that I use.

If I only use NVKush (with no plist.info changeS), it can see what my card is even if the memory is way off (it shows as 32MB memory) and 800x600 is the only resolution.

Something is strangely hosed, but I haven't been able to track it down. After my 8800GTX having weird issues and now my brand new 9800GX2, I think I'm done with Leopard.

How is it working with 10.5.5 ? Does it need a nvidia motherboard to work or any motherboard can use this "guide" ?

Japhex

I recently updated to 10.5.5 using the combo update from apple website and still have my GX2 working in tip top condition.

Caution: This guide may not yield results for non-nvidia motherboards, so please proceed at your own risk.

Why write MAY when the only had result from this topic is only who belong nvidia mobo? This is silly. Just change title in 9800GX2 for NVIDIA MOBO, at least ppl save time and fake hopes.

Greetings all :D ,

Being fairly new to osx86 my interest was caught a couple months ago. After vigorous trial and error I managed to get iDeneb's 10.5.4 running on my system as outlined below:

ASUS M3A32-MVP DLX (Nvidia based)

AMD 64 Athlon X2 Dual Core 4800+

2 X 1GB Crucial Ballistix

WD 320GB SATA HD

At the time I was utilizing a EVGA eGeforce 9600GT and as mentioned by 'AqUaRiUz' a few posts up, I was booting up fine with low resolutions and no extra features with this card.

I then came across this thread and have been following it so I decided to take advantage of a step-up promo EVGA was offering only for a 9800 GX2.

I just received the card a few days ago and made the swap. I booted up into Leopard with no issues as it was working prior with the older card. I then followed the instructions in post #1 using the files in post #3 I believe it was, and rebooted.

Now I get to the loading screen and then nothing but a black screen after that.

Can anyone offer some further insight to this? Firstly, how can I get back to using the old kexts and secondly is there any obvious reason from what you seasoned tweakers can see from my info as to why this is not working? Now keep in mind, my knowledge of working with kexts and Leopard for that matter is fairly modest. This is why I initially was interested in getting Leopard running on my PC is I'd like to learn a great deal about how to use it as I am considering purchasing a macbook.

Thanks in advance, definitely enjoying the challenge of running Leopard on my PC! :)

***update.

In response to my own post just above (#83) and any others that may find this useful, I just acquired a copy of iDeneb's fresh 10.5.5 v1.3 floating around out there. I reinstalled this version, using the 9.4.0 vanilla kernel and the, what appears to be, updated NVKUSH kext and voila, here I am back in Leopard typing to you!

Without making ANY modifications using the kexts on this thread, this is what system profiler is showing me using iDeneb's Leopard: (see attached)

So, if I am interpreting this correctly, iDeneb's copy here is properly recognizing my 9800 GX2, have full resolution, and QE/CI working, correct? The only thing I notice is that the ram is showing 256MB instead of 512MB.

Can this be corrected using ONE of the kexts earlier in the thread? Also, on a separate note, I noticed that it shows CPU's=2 under hardware, meaning it's recognizing both cores, BUT, the bus clock and cpu speed seem to be showing incorrectly as my bios is overclocked, yet 'system profiler' shows stock settings. Is this normal/correctable?

Thanks guys&gals hopefully someone in the know can respond, and hopefully my post here helps others that had similar issues by switching to iDeneb's newer version here. :D

Here are my specs if it helps any of you:

ASUS M3A32-MVP DLX (Nvidia based)

AMD 64 Athlon X2 Dual Core 4800+

2 X 1GB Crucial Ballistix

WD 320GB SATA HD

EVGA eGeforce 9800 GX2

OCZ GameXstream 700W PSU

Triple booting: XP, VISTA, LEOPARD 10.5.5 using Acronis Disk Director Suite/OS Selector

1. Uninstall / Delete NVinject.kext

2. Install GeForce.kext, NVDAResman.kext and NVDANV50Hal.kext, NVKush.kext (from post 3)

3. Change the com.apple.Boot.plist.

Go to /Library/Preferences/System Configuration/

and COPY com.apple.Boot.plist to Desktop and open it using TextEdit.

Now replace teh contents of the file with the following:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple Computer//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">

<plist version="1.0">

<dict>

<key>Kernel</key>

<string>mach_kernel</string>

<key>Kernel Flags</key>

<string>-f cpus=1</string>

<key>Timeout</key>

<string>5</string>

</dict>

</plist>

Save com.apple.Boot.plist and move it back to /Library/Preferences/System Configuration/.

4. Now go to Disk Utility and select your Leopard volume and repair permissions.

5. Now reboot

Hey,

i think i might have done it wrong the 1st time round.

got a noob question.. how do you install the .kext?

is it copy .kext and paste to.....

OSx86/System/Library/Extensions/ ?

or do i have to something else?

where you said Delete NVinject.kext

do i find that in.. OSx86/System/Library/Extensions/ ?

if so i don't have it, would i just skip step 1?

kthx

Use Kext Helper 0.7b to install kexts... it's easy just drop the files .kext into the kext helpers window type your password and "easy install" :)

If you don't have nvinject you can skip this step.

I see again many ppl do confusion, others reply how to do for make it work, but still ppl not understand main point:

- who isnt able to install 9800gx2 with this guide IS BECAUSE BELONG NO NVIDIA MOBO

- who successed and who still reply, should check first ppl hardware before put them in mistake and fake hope because i see all you got success have all NVIDIA BASED MOBO...so please do ppl favour to stop make them fake hope, they dont have NVIDIA BASED MOBO, this guide work ONLY on NVIDIA BASED MOBO!

I wrote already in past in this topic to CHANGE TITLE like 9800GX2 + NVIDIA BASED MOBO!

General title plus pinned topic make confusion, let ppl without NVIDIA BASED MOBO try endless on their different hardware without success and waste their time.

So moderator or who can, fix title of this topic as

Make 9800GX2 + NVIDIA BASED MOBO work in Mac Leopard 10.5.3!

I have XFX 9800GX2 and intel mobo (X38). It works with Azamic's kexts for 3-5 minutes like a charm with full resolution support and correct identification in SysProfiler, then everything hangs, no reaction for mouse movement or keyboard typing, but sound still works (playing songs in itunes). Can you tell me, please, how can I diagnose what's going on with my system when it freezes (i mean where i can find necessary logs)?

Upd: Tried another kexts, got the same freeze.

Upd2: Everything is fine, if i don't move my mouse. When i move it more than 2 minutes, everything stops working.

Upd3: After system's start, monitor blinks 2 times and dmesg show this entry: "kernel[0]: IOHIDSystem::relativePointerEventGated: Unwanted Direction Change Y: oldDy=359 dy=-8298"

Upd4: Solved, thanks for everyone!

I've got iDeneb's 10.5.5v1.3 and this card works great (QE/CI Enabled) but as I mentioned earlier, I only get 256MB vs 512MB, will using these kexts here solve this and do I have to use ALL of them? iDeneb v1.3 comes packed with NVKUSH.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

How did you solve this?

I solved this by changing slots -- moved videocard to the second slot and then i was able to boot in fullscreen resolution (1920x1200) with stable system and properly identificated videocard. But still i can not enable qe\ci. Azamic's kexts, Aqua-mac's kexts, custom strings -- no luck, "Quartz exteme not supported", "Core image: software".

  • 1 month later...

I am wondering, provided I get 9800 GX2 working with 2 displays. Would both displays be driven by the same GPU core or each display get a separate core? The reason I ask is that because I am currently running on 2 display cards, each driving a display by itself. I want to upgrade, and I guess if I can get GX2's each core to drive a display, this would be an easier upgrade.

Thanks

Thanks for the reply. But what I want to know is that whether each core drive a DVI output, or just the first core drive both DVI outputs. I like to have dual monitor setup, and I want each monitor driven by a different core.

BTW thanks for the tips on the MB. Mine is a P5K Pro, so I will research more first. Thanks.

Cheers
