MacApprentice Posted March 5, 2006 Share Posted March 5, 2006 Hey people, I gonna buy some hardware tomorrow and got some things listed, tell me what you think and if some parts could be better : - Asus P5GD1-VM motherboard (one of the most compatible it seems) - Asus P5LD2-VM Motherboard (better) - INTEL Celeron D 346 3.06 GHz BOX - Antec Minuet II case (cause it looks good ) - 2xOCZ PC4200 512Mo DDR2 Value - Seagate 40Go 7200 RPM UDMA100 (Barracuda 7200.7) - Pioneer DVD burner. I'm not that sure about the Celeron D, some people talked about a P4 820 but I can't find any here, and the MB doesn't support dual core cpus. The Minuet II power is only 220w, would this be enough for this monster? can I expect a x1600 to work too? You should check out the Pentium D 9xx processors and specifically the 920. It's based on the new 65mm technology and according to this review you can do some massive over clocking with it with out any special coolers. The 920 is compatible with the same MOBO you are looking at, which is the same one I'm looking at. The 820 was only over clockable to 3.5Ghz where as the 920 was over clockable to 4.07Ghz. These numbers where found by finding the highest clock speed where the systems were stable for 24hours @ 100% cpu load. http://www.overclockers.com.au/article.php?id=452447&P=4 You may want to consider a higher power supply. The smallest I normally put in a system is a 300W Antech, Ultra, or equivalent supply. I personally have the Ultra X-Connect 500W PSU. I found it free after rebate a few weeks ago. I just put together a box with the above components as well, and was having similar difficulties. I was leaning pretty heavily to that being the problem, since I'm able to get to the bios for a few seconds before the system dies on me. But getting some verification is the straw that's going to let me justify getting a new PSU today, and having some play time during what's left of the weekend. Thanks! johnemerson Posted March 25, 2006 Share Posted March 25, 2006 Thanks for the NX/XD bit advice! I think that, on top of the problems I'd been having, would have been the final thing to drive me mad. I need to get the sound going still, but from what I've read it seems like a pretty easy step. It took a while to get up to that point though! Last weekend I bought the same Antec PSU MacApprentice mentioned, and didn't have any luck. Headed back out again, and just made it to the store before it closed, to go one step higher in the PSU game. And, still didn't get anything. By that point I'd spent nearly the entire weekend on the computer with no signs of improvement. Tested out the ram on monday at work, and no sign of a problem there. In the end I forced myself to check out the one piece I didn't want to mess with anymore, and yep, the cpu. The thermal pad had bombed out on me. A little thermal paste, and everything worked fine. So far, aside from a few mishaps on my part, the motherboard seems to be a pretty awesome buy. Actually seeing osx running with QE on non-mac hardware was worth the trouble! MatrixDweller Posted September 19, 2006 Share Posted September 19, 2006 I just built a system with an Antech Minuet II case. I thought I messed up when I found out the power supply was only 220W. I mistakenly read it was 300, but that's the new version of the Minuet. The system I built had an even more powerful processor, an Intel Pentium D 805 @ 2.66GHz. That's mounted on an Asus P5RD2-VM with 512MB of PC5400 DDR2 memory. The only other non-integrated things in the system are a Samsung SHS162BK DVD burner and a 80GB Western Digital 7200RPM IDE drive. I found this article on Intel's site which may be of interest. ATX Power Supply Guidlines and Tests Minimums for the 3.3V line would be Pentium4 (84W)-- 13A continuous Pentium D 805 (95W) -- 13A continuous and 16.5A peak for at least 10ms. The good thing about Antec is that they rate there power supplies to the true wattage and not the calculated maximum. Hense the Minuet's 220W would probably be equivalent if not better that one of the cheap 300-350W power supplies that come with $25 cases. Here's a link to the Minuet's power supply rating: Antec Minuet PS Rating the rating on the 3.3V lineis 17A. I'm just barely scraping by but you should be fine. You and I just can not add any power hungry components into our systems. The mATX mobos don't suck too much juice, but if decided to add in a PCIe video card or a RAID array of drives the system would probably fail. Anyway the system boots up perfectly and after that it loads XP it runs all normal programs fine (ie: IE, Outlook, MS Office, Defrag, Nero, etc). I will try running some 3D benchmarks and system stressing apps to see if it remains stable. I'll keep this thread up to date.
