muitommy
Mysticus, my apologies for what is likely a stupid question ... but ... what is the difference between the 9.5 vanilla kernel and the 9.4 stagexnu? The stigma around the vanilla (at least from a relatively new persons point of view) is that it can do updates direct from Apple Update while others cannot. Is this true in this case or can the stagexnu kernel do updates as well? Maybe if you explained the difference people wouldnt be so apt to use the vanilla one:) BTW, the 1.1.3a updates of your worked flawlessly on my test partiiton except one error, startup item /library/startupitems/shutdownfix does not have the proper security settings. I just clicked "Fix" and it worked fine. the compatibility of vanilla kernel in certain mobo, even for intel mobo is not very good. there're issue linking with speedstep, sleep, proper shutdown, various problems may or may not occur. but surely stagexnu have better compatibility of various cpu, have both speedstep and sleep working together, should shutdown properly without replacing acpiplatform ... (hope i i didn't mix things up lol, correct me if i'm wrong)
Mysticus C*
Mysticus, my apologies for what is likely a stupid question ... but ... what is the difference between the 9.5 vanilla kernel and the 9.4 stagexnu? I just clicked "Fix" and it worked fine. What is kernel? in brief: it is the hearth of any operating system. Update is modifying operating systems functions or adding better heart to the system, but to be able to update, you need to have a running system. Think of KERNEL as an engine of a car (PC)... DRIVER as components to get the power from the engine and help the car move or do special actions... like tyres to move the car, steering equipment to turn around, break to stop... UPDATE is more like TUNING a car! getting tyres for specific purposes, or getting a modified engine, or modifying the engine... extend the story as you like, but brief story is like this... You cannot put an X engine into Y brand car always, engine has certain dimensions and connections to other components in the car! But you can always modify/tune it to fit for specific cars and needs stagexnu, or toh sleep kernel, or voodoo, or nforce kernel, are patched/recompiled kernels that are for specific cpus?chipsets? or general use? and these patched kernels has nothing to do with update either! perception of vanilla is usually wrong... it has nothing to do with updating with original updates... vanilla kernel means only it is original non-patched kernel from apple... it has lots of issues on non-apple products... speedstep, shutdown, sleep is some of those, which partly or in full doesnt work in even fully compatible mobos (except real macs) without further patched files or additional software installs... also, noone is really doing major full updates directly from apple without using special booting methods (like boot-132, efix etc...) and/or terminal commands prior to updating and even after update, before restarting, you still need to replace some scripts (if you are on non patched direct boot systems....) i add vanilla option for people who knows what it is/does... but from what i see, there are many noobs around, who doesnt read any single line from first posts, or no hobby of learning a thing or two by searching around guides... I say DONT PM ME Support Questions, PM is only for file/link requests, right in the first paragraph, I still receive 5-10 PMs everyday, just asking me the exact questions i say not to be asked by PM (the reason behind not PMing support questions is that we are community here, and if you ask the question in public, everyone can see the question, maybe someone else had the trouble and found a different workaround to the problem can asnwer... or next time someone has same problem with same specs, can read and dont need to ask the question which is already answered! (which hardly happens that people go search the forum for specific problems and than ask the question if no asnwer around, unlike people jump to last page and ask without reading a single line) I say, install 1 this 2 that 3, that and in 3 do this and that, and people still do it wrong... (not talking about some specific cases with those with some nforce chipsets, and those irrelevant systems to my topic like amd cpu questions...) Someone asks me what to do, i tell him the options, and he still does something else, and ask help again... If you dont want to listen, dont ask help... Last but not least, is if you wanna ask for help, there is a proper structure way of asking help.... 1) make a hardware profile in your signature, so noone has to go back and forth to find your specs, 2) state what you have done specifically, step by step (not just i have dont the guide it doesnt work) what have you done? which steps have you followed? and what choices have u made if you followed the guide? 3) and finally most crucial is what/when happened? possibly booting with -v will provide some insight into the problems, so get the screen caps and post them... if you dont do above steps, it is extremely hard to figure out what is wrong.... even you stated everything correctly and properly, there is no guarantee to know what might be causing the trouble exactly... there is way too many configs to know, and even configs are fine, bioses has issues! working with certain drivers! like acpicpupowermanagement! or hardwaresensors? or apic? or something else... which is beyond my knowledge... if you dont know something ask first, but make sure you dont ask question like is this gonna work on amd cpu? read the title? or how do i do clone system? read the damn first post! if you dont understand ask for details for where you have doubts.... Mysticus C*
neew: make a clean install of whatever you used before (preferably kalyway 10.5.1 or 10.5.2 or jas 10.5.4 release?) and follow the guide and suggestions! and dont choose 10 drivers for the same device! read my suggestion in post #1336
da_n0n3
Ok I used the flat image and dd to the partition so its a clean and working 10.5.0 I use the 3 steps as stated in the beggining. After choosing Just the ToH kernel or StageXNU kernel they both send a Kill signal after reboot. I choose - Chipset ICHx ; Graphic Nvinject 640mb ; Audio Just restore ; Network Just restore ; SMBOIS 1333mhz Is it the flat image 10.5.0 that might be the problem? *edit* when choosing StageXNU, Chipset ICHx, no graphics; Audio Just restore ; Network Just restore ; SMBOIS 1333mhz It reboots - dsmos send a kill signal it reboots to a blue screen with a cursor. thank you

The only reason I ask is because I've probably installed Leopard literally at least 30 times haha. Lots and lots of trial and error. So I really dont want to go for 31.
