Complete Updates for Newbies and All -- Currently 10.5.5 Combo (Only Intel CPUs)

Hi Mysticus,

First of all thanks for your update. I got it to work (finally). It was no easy task for me, started over a lot of times from the moment you PM'd me 5.5 hours earlier :) . (Combo update)

The first thing that changed for me was I had to go into my bios and change SATA configuration to AHCI. Kalyway installs on IDE.

After discovering this I got to a hanging blue screen the first time, figured I needed to install NVinject 512 after all (thought 10.5.5 supported 8800GT 512). After complete reinstall a hanging black screen, figured this was because Speedstep setting was wrong or I missed something in the customize.

At the moment Did the following Customize settings with the working setup:

9.5.0 Vanilla Kernel

ICHX bla bla chipset

Nvinject 512

ADIinstaller application (not checked if it worked yet)

Just restore network

USB2.0 controller fix

The time it worked I did not choose the smbios. I chose the vanilla one for all the other installations. Maybe this doesn't work OK on my system. This is what I am going to change next install. (since I don't know how to change it without a reinstall, but i will try the postinstall script first before formatting ).

I re-enabled the speedstep after install and it worked still, but wonder if this is wise (A)

I'll keep you posted on discoveries I do.

Hey Mysticus --

Did you get a chance to look into the Marvell Yukon issues (and hopefully add them to your next release)?

Pulled this out of the console logs:

Sep 25 22:18:27 localhost kernel[0]: yukon: Ethernet address 00:1d:60:4f:88:d8

Sep 25 22:18:27 localhost kernel[0]: yukon: Ethernet address 00:1d:60:4f:83:92

Sep 25 22:18:34 localhost kernel[0]: AppleYukon2 - en2 link active, 1000-Mbit, full duplex, symmetric flow control enabled port 0

Sep 26 05:38:12 localhost kernel[0]: yukon: Ethernet address 00:1d:60:4f:88:d8

Sep 26 05:38:12 localhost kernel[0]: yukon: Ethernet address 00:1d:60:4f:83:92

Sep 26 05:38:18 localhost kernel[0]: AppleYukon2 - en2 link active, 1000-Mbit, full duplex, symmetric flow control enabled port 0

Sep 26 08:15:40 localhost kernel[0]: AppleYukon2: 00000000,00000000 sk98osx_dnet - AllocIOInterruptHandler - Failed to allocate MSI interrupt

Both LAN adapters worked after a fresh install of Kalyway 10.5.1 and 10.5.2, and stopped working after updating to 10.5.5.

Thanks very much for all your hard work!

EDIT==> here's another (but longer) log from later on the 26th (which would be after the updates if my fuzzy memory serves me well) at Pastebin.

No real requests yet, I have been using osx86 for about 1 week now and have tons to learn. I would appriciate adding an as complete as possible description to all patches (to speed up my trial and error and determining if I need it). I can understand though you will do this in a later stadium perhaps.

Cheers

i try to be as clear as possible, but cant explain everytg in too much details, as it is your own responsibility to know your own system to what you have, and what each things are for... if you wanna learn something, just search around for your particular needs. the reason why i cant explain things in too much details is because there are way too many hardware configs, and if i try to go into all of them, i will need to do a lot of research for things that i dont have... i make the installer as simple as possible so people can choose things easier... but i cant guarantee anything that will definitely work on all hardware configs, bcoz it wont work on all configs as easy.... some systems need specific patches, drivers and or modding, which i cant really know, thats why i ask people to send me their specific needs and i can add them to current and future packages...

So I was an idiot and forgot to hit "Customize" in my post-upgrade setup. Now my system boots up, but after the pale blue screen, I have no picture. I believe this is just a lack of a graphics driver (intel GM965). Is there something I can do to fix this over ssh or single-user mode, or is my system hosed and I need a re-install?

Edit: I also have full filesystem access from my linux install, in case there's anything useful I can do from there.

Just wanted to followup on my previous posts 1186 & 1190.

Problem: System will always freeze in step 2 (installing the combo update)

Resolution: Booting with cpus=1, run post update & only select graphics, run pre-update, then run official 10.5.5 update. For me, the official update was able to complete. However, before running the post update, I'll get a freeze. So what i did was boot into another working system (thankfully i followed the 3-partition rule) then run the post update on the "appropriate" destination. <<--- Doing this is risky, as pointed out in the tutorial, so backup backup.

Anyway, after that I was able to successfully update to 10.5.5.

Good luck

yeah! i got QE/CI working! but not with this update methode. the methode i choosed worked for my hardware, so don`t think this would be the solution for everyone with lost QE/CI!

what i did:

-kalyway 10.5.2 install

-leopard graphics update

-chameleon and my old backuped boot.plist with efi strings for audio and gfx

-aqua-macs kexts (only needed specialy for my graphic card, look at sig wich one)

-mysticus 10.5.3 update, after install desktop won`t appear whithout installing aqua-macs kexts again

-10.5.4 update from apple

-10.5.5 update 316mb, not the combo!!! installed manualy by netkas methode

-reverted to audio and network kexts from 10.5.4, installed some kexts for specialy my mainboard from this post

-shutdown fix (can`t find link, but it`s somewhere here in the forum posted)

essentialy for me was to do not the combo update and to do it with the netkas methode to get QE/CI working. all other methodes i found in this forum didn`t work for my system/hardware.

@mysticus: although your methode did not work for me i want to say thank you for the time you tried to help me!

what is working:

-QE/CI

-audio

-network

-sleep

-restart/reboot

-shutdown

what doesn`t work:

-shutdown after sleep

the only strange thing is that my model name/identifier is now "iMac7,1". other modified smbios with macpro hardcoded did not change this. but hey, this is only a aesthetic problem.^^

I installed the Kalyway 10.5.2 with intel x3100 driver selected. After installing the post install patch i chose just restore x3000 series for intel. after i reboot it just shows a pale blue screen and nothing loads, i can't see the mouse, etc. Did I choose the wrong one?

try waiting 3-5 minutes at that screen, mine for some reason sits at a black screen for about 3 minutes then comes up normally

I am considering going back to 10.5.4 until all the bugs get worked out in the 10.5.5. updates

Hey, there

installed doing these steps.

ran prepatch, then right after ran applied apple update.dmg, right after that Ran postpatch

I used your method and it works great, but I did not get a choice of Customizing anything and when it rebooted all is well.

but when I click on "about this mac", it shows I have a Intel core duo 2 running at 3.8 GHZ when it Should tell me that I have an Intel Core duo 2 running at 2.2 GHZ (E4500 seris), so my question is did it over-clock my cpu ?, is it safe to run it at this configuration ?, or do I need to repeat the process ?.

and yes I followed the instructions in this thread.

my hardware is:

Mobo: P5GC MX 1333 Asus

Ram: 2 GB 667

Video card: Nvidia 7300 GS

Audio: HDA sigmatel compat and working

North birdge: 945GC Intel

South bridge: ICH7 family

Lan adapter: Attansic/Atheros PCIe and not working

Wirelss adapter: Belkin FD58053 Working good at 54 MBS

installed using Kalaway OSX 10.5.2 /Intel/Amd DVD

settings used during install:

Vidoe: Ninject 256

Bios: recommended ones with coreplayer Fix

Kernel: 9.2 sleep

patches : Intel memory managment, time machine fix

Third party software : Vlc, Pacifist, Xbench, BOM archiver, persian

all other setting left at thier defaults

if there is no problem then great, but if running in this state will damage the computer I need to know so I can fix it.

Thanks for your time.

Russ

Edit: Update on my situation.

well I did a little looking around my OS X install and found that a few Apps aren't working but it is running like a bat out of hell which I guess is good and bad.

the non-working apps are Time machine, system profiler, Xbench all of them seem to quit for no reason have no idea why.

is there a way to change the kernel that is used in during start up back to the one I started with before the update ?, I checked the Mac file system but it is not anything like the Linux layout or even the BSD one from which it is derived from.

sorry about all the questions.

Edit: Second update every thing is fixed now

Resolved it by:

1. rerunning prepatch

2. rerunning Apple update dmg image

3. rerun postpatch and finally noticed the customize button to the left (stupid me, I know)

4. went through found what was relevant to me and woohoo it works :(

however system profiler still does not work as it should but Xbench does and here are the results I got from it:

Good job man, I did the same thing as we both had the same problem, and it worked!

The only thing though, is that I didn't have to boot with cpus=1 nor run the post update prior to the 10.5.5 update.

But hey, as long as it works, thx for providing a solution :(

I followed the steps and after the restart, mac os could not boot anymore... it keeps restarting at the bootloader.

Damn it, I knew i should stay on 10.5.2 when everything was runing ok... will stick to my old rule: Do not update if it runs ok.

Gotta reinstall the os x now... cause i can't stay long in this windows ... :D

read the post#1 carefully, to have a brick free how-to guide, understand that, u ll never brick it anymore... also, tell us what happened? in which order did you install? what did you install? and if u followed the order, what did you choose in last step?

than we may be able to give you help... do not afraid to brick your system, it is one part of the learning curve!!! i bricked my system probably 20 times until i got it right...

so dont give up for bricking, but try to learn from mistakes... also make sure you read guides carefully and completely, not just one sentence or skim read...

Update News to All:

I am finally wrapping up the revision and will post it to Bike Town shortly... (sorry a bit late, but this is weekend, full of house works :) )

Otherwise i read all the instructions carefully and did the steps exactly the way they were written. but i am not sure what happened... nvm i will try until i succeed.

Thanx for the support...

pre and post update scripts works for MacOS 10.5.5 Server Combo update too. Updated Jas 10.5.4 Server to 10.5.5. All works, except Intel Pro 1000 L ethernet network - must manualy set speed, ip etc, then reboot, set dhcp - then network card shows no cable connection and internet IS working :(. The same story in 10.5.5 client. Something wrong with IONetworkingFamily.kext.

is intel pro 1000L using patched drivers inside ionetworkingfamily? or its own driver?

also have you tried restore network option?

thanx for feedback by the way :)

I updated my Kalyway 10.5.2. system using your guide, but the next time i booted the System was stuck on the Apple-Screen. I left it for about an hour, but it didnt do anything.

I rebooted with the -v option, and there were a few errors:

These were written in yellow letters:

Failed to load extension com.orByte.driver.PCGenUSBEHCI
Class "AppleEHCIedMemoryBlock" is duplicate
duplicate class
kmod_control/start failed for com.orByte.driver.PCGenUSBEHCI; destroying kmod
Failed to load extension com.orByte.driver.PCGenUSBEHCI
AppleGenericPCATADriver: CMD 0x1f0, CTR0x3f4, IRQ14

And this is the last message appearing when trying to boot:

BootCache: hit rate below threshold (183 hits on 501 lookups)

So, what have i done wrong? If the system is totally fu... destroyed, can i save my data somehow?

Thanks in advance.

Ok got 10.5.5 combo update working now. My big mistake was to choose the smbios kernel that had vanilla behind it. I chose the Mac Pro this time and for now it seems to work fine. I did however change my bios settings to AHCI and updated my XP install with some guide. I have Dual boot now (chain0)

I attached a rtf file with everything worth mentioning (I think) in the About this mac section (system information) I hope it is of any use to you if you compare it with my signature or something.

Many thanks for all your work. Though I still have lots to learn you have made it fairly easy to update.

When I have tested everything extensively I will add my findings to the compatability list in the wiki.

P.S. I agree fully with your explanation about the descriptions I mentioned earlier, I hope I did not annoy you with it or anything, that was not my intend. It's just that now when you do the postprocess step, there is no description at all for the patches, wich can point you in the right direction (As the kalyway install does, though minimalistic). But again, I can understand you will focus on supporting hardware and requests first.

Cheers from the Netherlands and my 10.5.5 Mac pro OSX86

i started to hate newcomers...

before stating a problem, explain how did you update? and what did you do? pre update, official, post update? did you follow it? also what options have you chosen? for god sake, this is written in the guide, what to do step by step, and explained how to ask help... people cant read a couple of lines...

Sorry...

So, i picked the 9.5.0 Vanilla Kernel, the ICHx chipset driver, Nvkush, restore Audio, restore Network, chose the SMBIOS options i wanted and the DSMOS (which was automatically picked)

I did the pre update, the official 10.5.5 combo update, the post update. I can't think of anything else
